Jump Start Line Up

Twelve road-tested lithium jump packs that cover everything from compact city cars to big V8s and light-duty diesels. All hover around 4.8★ reviews or better – this is the short list you actually want in your trunk. From Costco parking-lot chaos to desert “no service” moments, these 4,000–10,000 amp bricks turn click-click-silence into a 60-second save.

Jump Start.

The last place you want to audition your survival skills is the Costco parking lot at 9 p.m., in the rain, with a trunk full of melting frozen veggies and a car that only says click. I watched a guy in that exact situation quietly pop his hood, pull out a chunky little power pack, clip it on, and drive away before the cart wrangler even finished his round. No shame, no jumper cable tango with strangers in minivans. Ten years ago that scene would’ve been a 45-minute group project; now it’s a 60-second solo.

My own “never again” moment was on a desert pull-off, somewhere between “No Service” and “Are we still on Earth?” I’d left the dome light on while shooting night sky photos. The battery died, my phone was at 3%, and my only hope was that a passing RV would a) appear and b) be less murder-y than my imagination suggested. It all worked out, but as soon as I got back to civilization I bought a jump pack and decided I would never again bet my life on “probably someone will come by.”

Portable jump starters are basically tiny superpowers for people who hate being stuck. And the numbers say stuck from battery problems is extremely common. In 2024, AAA responded to over 27 million emergency roadside service calls in the U.S.; about 7 million of those—roughly 26%—were for battery issues alone.[1] That’s millions of jump starts, tests, and on-the-spot replacements every year from one road service brand. If you think you’re “probably fine,” those numbers are gently laughing at you.

This review looks at a lineup of 12 portable power packs from midrange 4,000-amp units up to monster 10,000-amp bricks. They all promise the same core thing—“we’ll get you started”—but differ on how strong, how long, and how many extra tricks they bring. We’ve got:

  • Peak amps from 4,000 to 10,000
  • Batteries from 18,000 mAh to 40,000 mAh
  • Prices from about $80 to $250
  • Extras like air compressors, radios, solar input, inverters, dual USB-C, smart clamps, and more

I’ll walk through the tiers, then pull it together with a “who should buy what” summary.
